Ruins of the Nieuwe Sint-Anna Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

In the meantime, the church has been restored, renovated and converted into a unique event location with a public lookout post on the roof, designed by DMOA architects.
The chapel is now accompanied by a ‘vestibule’ in the form of a concrete sculpture. This hidden staircase with Escher-like allure leads the visitor past panoramic scenes to the top. On the roof, between the facades of the chapel, a magnificent view of the region unfolds. From here you get an unprecedented perspective of the Meikensbossen and the Poelberg. If you look closely, you can even spot the church towers of Marialoop and Dentergem. (source: Westtoer - Horizon 2025)
Another fun fact: The neo-Gothic Sint-Anna chapel was built in 1864, but was never consecrated for unclear reasons.

Holy Family Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Striking structure in the shape of a cross. As you approach, you will see that a niche has been left in the centre of the cross. An image of the Holy Family can be seen in it.
The chapel dates from around 2005. So it is both a field cross and a chapel.

Poelbergbosje Picnic Area

Highlight • Rest Area

Here on the flank of the Poelberg there used to be a football field with a canteen. It has now been transformed into a beautiful, quiet natural spot with a picnic bench: the Poelbergbosje. The picnic area is furnished with sturdy picnic furniture. Ideal for a rest and enjoying your picnic.

Poelbergmolen

Highlight • Monument

The oldest known mention of the Poelberg mill dates from 1668, the current wooden post mill was built in 1726. This date has been found on various mill parts. After the Second World War, the mill was repaired from war damage. A thorough renovation took place in 1957. The mill remained in operation until about 1970. When the mill became city property in 1980, it was in a very dilapidated condition. Restoration work began in 1989, making it ready for grinding again in 1993. To preserve the openness of the area and the wind catch, the surrounding landscape was protected as a village view in 1993.

From the Meikensbos you have a beautiful view of the Poelberg near Tielt, a 45-metre-high hill with a rich history and a striking rural character. At the top is the Poelbergmolen, a windmill from 1726 that is a protected heritage site, and a former monastery of the Sisters of the Faith with a Lourdes grotto and a historic procession from 1938. Since the restoration of the monastery complex in 2011, the building has served as a visitor centre and tourist information point. The Poelberg, with its steep climb that challenges many cyclists, is, together with the surrounding Meikensbossen, a popular place for nature and heritage lovers.

Meikensbossen

Highlight • Forest

Since the Flemish Region became the owner of the centuries-old Vijverbos, the green area in the northeast of Dentergem has been called ‘the Meikensbos’, after a reference on the Sanderus map of 1641, namely Meykenhoek. In the 19th century, these forests became fragmented. Due to the steady cutting for firewood during the two world wars and due to development for the benefit of agricultural land, the forest area shrank to a mere 5 ha. The agency for Nature and Forests bought 46 ha of land between 2000 and 2010. The domain is further developed and afforested annually. It consists of forest area, a seed orchard, pasture and fallow areas. The area is particularly interesting for many animal groups such as birds and butterflies.

Short autumn walk in the neighborhood with daughter. During the trip, the windmill on the Poelberg was turning. Arrived at the windmill, the blades were already at rest and at the request of the miller, the windmill was rotated 180 degrees with 4 men, so that the front faces the rainy side instead of the door

Instead of 7.25 km, it became a trip of just under 9 km, through new reservoirs that had swallowed up my paths. Some very wide paths in that Meikensbos.
