St. Peter's Square

Highlight • Monument

St. Peter's Square is among the most famous squares in the world. It is a symbol not only of spirituality but also of culture, being among the greatest architectural works of the Western world. To understand its magnificence you have to look at it from above and you can do this by climbing inside the Dome of St. Peter. Inside the Basilica there are signs leading to the ticket office to go up to the Dome (the Basilica can be visited for free). The view you can admire from those 140 meters is unique and worth every penny paid!

Castel Sant'Angelo is a monument of Rome located on the right bank of the Tiber in front of the homonymous bridge. The origins of Castel Sant'Angelo date back to 135 AD, when the emperor Hadrian commissioned the architect Demetriano to build a funeral mausoleum for himself and his family. In the following centuries up to the present day, the castle lost its function as a sepulcher and was subject to radical changes which gave it its current appearance. Today Castel Sant'Angelo is state property of the Italian State and is connected to the Vatican State through the fortified corridor of the "passetto".

The Helical Staircase in the Vatican Museums, located in Vatican City, is an architectural marvel. Although at first glance it looks like a single staircase, it is actually made up of two intertwined spirals: one to go up and the other to go down. Designed in 1932 by the Italian Giuseppe Momo, this staircase is a delight for photography lovers. If you have the opportunity to visit the Vatican Museums, don't miss this gem along with the famous Sistine Chapel.

View of the Piazza del Popolo

Highlight • Viewpoint

Interestingly, there are different traditions for the name Popolo or the place. First, the name indicates that it was built with the money of the Roman population. On the other hand it reminds of poplars that should have been here in the past. According to another theory, the word 'Popolo' should have nothing to do with the word 'people', but be an old term for a parish.

The Trinità de 'Monti staircase, a masterpiece of scenographic taste from the 18th century, was built between 1723 and 1726 by the architect Francesco de Sanctis. The staircase, built in travertine, is made up of a series of sections, 11 in total and each one made up of 12 steps, which divide, meander, meet, continuously changing direction. A series of balustrades accompanies the ramps: they interrupt the steep slope and function as a stopping point and to enjoy the landscape. The great structure, which established a connection between an area of the city with a strong French presence and the Spanish colony in the lower part, constitutes an architectural space that serves for transit, but even more as a meeting place and a pleasant stop.
