Interestingly, there are different traditions for the name Popolo or the place. First, the name indicates that it was built with the money of the Roman population. On the other hand it reminds of poplars that should have been here in the past. According to another theory, the word 'Popolo' should have nothing to do with the word 'people', but be an old term for a parish.

When you stand on the Piazza del Popolo you can hardly imagine this
beautiful square, one of the largest and most beautiful in Rome was used a long time ago
as a place of public execution. Three major straight traffic axes come together here, the Via di Ripetta, the Via del Corso and the Via del Babuino. In the middle is the 24-meter high obelisk from Egypt that has adorned the square since 1586.

The two churches on the square look like identical twins, but there is a difference. Both
were designed by Rainaldi and were therefore built in a short time between 1660 and 1680. The Santa
Maria dei Miracoli has a round dome and Santa Maria di Montesanto has one
oval dome. The bell tower of the latter was added in the 18th century. But many
do not know that the most beautiful church is Santa Maria del Popolo.
