Amsel Bridge over the Ilmenau

Highlight • Bridge

Wilschenbruch, the smallest district with only about 600 inhabitants, is located in the south of Lüneburg. It is surrounded by forest, the Ilmenau passes by to the west, and the Hanover-Hamburg railway to the east. The path to the Wilschenbruch district leads over the Amselbrücke bridge.

Schroedersgarten on the Ilmenau

Highlight • Restaurant

Rustic garden restaurant in the middle of Lüneburg with beach chairs and boat rentals directly on the Illmenau. There is a great playground for kids. In rainy weather there are plenty of umbrellas to put under... actually a tip for any weather! There is also a winter garden for fresh air fans.
Getting there: My favorite is by canoe (tour from Bienenbüttel and with a get-out and a well-deserved after-work beer at Schröders), by bike - is right on the Illmenau cycle path or on foot - just a short walk from the train station or downtown Lüneburg.

This small but important bridge over the Ilmenau connects the Clamart Park with the Wandrahm Park and is used a lot by pedestrians and cyclists.

This sculpture puzzles me, and unfortunately, I didn't see any information panel nearby. A web search wasn't very fruitful either.

On Alamy's photo sales page, it's listed as "Monument to the Brick," and I found an article in the TAZ newspaper about a brick project from 2005. I imagine this sculpture might be related to that, but the corresponding website is no longer online.

The Dragoons were stationed in the Lüner barracks from 1871-1919. They traced their tradition back to the Hussar Regiment, which Albrecht von Estorff recruited from volunteers in 1813. The memorial designed by Emil Cauer shows horse and rider trotting in a natural way. The dragoon wears the peace uniform that was used in the cityscape until 1914. The monument, inaugurated in 1939 before the start of the war, does not look overly pathetic or heroic, but it also lacks any expression of sadness.

This monument always triggers discomfort and contradiction in me, but it has its place in history. Originally there was another one, but in 1939 it did not fit into the ideology and was smashed. However, the dragoon does not wear the peace uniform and lance in an attacking position. Incidentally, the park was renamed after the Lüneburg twin town of Clamart in France. Also a sign of reconciliation. The example of Ina Holle, who found her great-great-uncle there and made it a moving story, shows that these plaques sometimes even make personal connections.
