Eagle Crag

Highlight • Climb

Eagle Crag is a Wainwright fell in the Central Lake District. From nearby Castle Crag, its profile looks a bit like a gorilla's face (if you squint!) The view down to Stonethwaite in the Borrowdale Valley from the slabbed summit of this fell is what I find the most special.

Sergeant's Crag

Highlight • Climb

Sergeant's Crag is a 1,873-foot (571 m) Wainwright fell in the Central Lake District National Park. It's most commonly hiked alongside it's neighbour to the north - Eagle Crag, from the Borrowdale valley. The two fells are connected by a trail which has one awkward step (at a wall corner) to contend with. From the summit of Sergeant's Crag, Skiddaw stands proudly in the distance.

Ullscarf Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ullscarf is a Wainwright fell in the Lake District National Park and one of the mountains that Alfred Wainwright chose to include in his selection of 214 best fells of the Lake District. I've visited the summit of this fell three times and all three times I've approached from the south (from the top of Greenup Edge Pass). The ground can be boggy and soft on the approach but after rising up to the broad summit plateau, the summit of Ullscarf is marked by a large cairn. From here you can appreciate the views (the views to the west/south-west certainly steal the show).

Standing at 1,778 feet (542 m) high, Lining Crag affords spectacular views over the rugged Lakeland landscape. Lining Crag is a child summit of High Raise.

Oak Wood Descent, Lake District National Park

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Wonderful but very steep path through old oak trees. Better to be sure-footed. You need to watch your steps carefully, so better look at the fine trees only when stopping. Not recommended in wet conditions.

Dock Tarn

Highlight • Natural

Nice hike from Watendlath or Stonethwaite to reach this tarn located in the fells. Some scrambling required, but well worth it. Nice views across the tarn and some great spots to take a rest.

Great Crag Summit Cairn

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 1,440-foot (449 m) high Wainwright summit of Great Crag has epic views to the north of Watendlath Tarn and the Skiddaw range. To the south-west, the valley view towards Seathwaite is equally impressive. I visited as it was easing towards sunset in April 2021 and it was so peaceful. The hills here are heather clad and a network of paths weave over and around the lumps and bounds of this fell which is full of character.
