Eagle Crag

Hiking

5.0

(34)

Above the village of Stonethwaite, in picturesque Borrowdale, rises a visually striking fell that rises in dramatic, rocky tiers to a fine summit. This is Eagle Crag, the termination of a slender arm flung out to the northwest from the broad mass of High Raise.

Despite being only two thirds as lofty as its parent peak, Eagle Crag is easily more charismatic, another one of those small peaks that outshine their higher companions. The cliffs of Heron Crag and then the Eagle Crag – the feature after which the fell is named – are impressive from Stonethwaite, but they are even more beguiling when viewed up close.

A visually striking Lakeland fell that packs a punch beyond its modest height

Adventurous souls will view the steep rocky cliffs of its north face and want to take them on. Fortunately, hikers and climbers can enjoy this aspect of Eagle Crag together, as there are ways that breach the imposing ramparts. However, unless familiar with the terrain, such a way is not recommended in descent. Sheep populate these terraces and could foreseeably take a tumble if worried, which means this is not a fell for your dog.

Other ways to Eagle Crag are gentler and approach via the rocky Wainwright of Sergeant’s Crag, which occupies the middle ground on High Raise’s northwestern arm. Regardless of which route you choose, you are likely to begin in Borrowdale, where there’s no shortage of accommodation.

The view towards the ridgelines of the North Western Fells is excellent, with the familiar hump of Catbells, the pointed peak of Grisedale Pike and the knobbly summit of Causey Pike all instantly recognisable.

    Hiking

Eagle Crag is a Wainwright fell in the Central Lake District. From nearby Castle Crag, its profile looks a bit like a gorilla's face (if you squint!) The view down to Stonethwaite in the Borrowdale Valley from the slabbed summit of this fell is what I find the most special.

This is a real rocky fortress this is. I should have come up it instead of down climbing it on a wet day but I wanted to do my route clockwise. Had a very interesting downclimb though, quite exposed grade 2 scramble on wet rock and turf. A thoroughly imposing mountain. Loved it.
