The park is located in a picturesque, mountainous area at an altitude of about 1100-1250 meters above sea level. It is famous for its dense forests – mainly black pine and beech – and exceptionally clean, crisp mountain air. It is located in central Albania and covers an area of 2000 hectares.

The park is widely known for its cool mineral springs with healing properties. The most famous of them is the "Queen Mother Spring" (in the past, water from here was delivered daily to the court of the Albanian royal family in Tirana). Due to this microclimate and water, a center for the treatment of lung diseases once operated in the area. Today, the mineral water "Qafshtama" is bottled and sold throughout Albania.

In the forests of the park live, among others, brown bears, wolves, foxes, as well as rare birds of prey (golden eagles, peregrine falcons). For visitors, it is an excellent place to escape the urban hustle and bustle, for mountain hiking, picnics, and camping.
