Je maintiendrai (Dutch: I will maintain) has been the motto of the Netherlands since 1815.
The motto is actually the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau, which William of Orange inherited along with the principality of Orange through the inheritance of René of Chalon. Originally, the motto was Je maintiendrai Chalon, but William changed it to Je maintiendrai Nassau. His successors omitted the word Nassau, and it simply became Je maintiendrai.
In a letter from January 1565, William of Orange explained his motto as follows:
I will maintain virtue and nobility
I will maintain the highness of my name
