The Germania monument on the church square commemorates the Wittmund soldiers who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. In the 1970s, the monument lost its sword and shield, which were only rediscovered much later in the attic of the cemetery chapel. In 2008, the entire statue was restored at the initiative of the Wittmund Local History Society.
