Until 1839 Vliermaalroot was dependent on the parish of Vliermaal. However, in 1847 Vliermaalroot became an independent parish. On the site of the chapel, which already existed in the 18th century, an eclectic building was founded under the architecture of Herman Jaminé. It has strong neo-Romanesque features, but neo-Gothic elements have also been incorporated. Construction took place between 1863 and 1871, and the church was consecrated in 1878.
The three-aisled brick church has a built-in west tower with a rhombic roof. Of importance are the partly climbing arched friezes, made of marlstone.
