Directly from the dike of the Rhein-Herne Canal, you get a wonderful insight into the extensive mining subsidence and nature reserve area. On extensive bodies of water, numerous bird species and even a grey heron colony can be observed. The biotope is a relatively natural and structurally rich area with deadwood for animal and plant species within the conurbation. Parts of the biotope are relatively undisturbed due to their location directly on the Rhein-Herne Canal.
The approximately 73-hectare wetland, where kingfishers and cormorants also breed, is a rare wetland biotope in the region.
