Ptarmigan is a subsidiary top of Ben Lomond and is named after the rotund bird species that inhabit the Highlands. The classic circuit of Ben Lomond descends via Ptarmigan's ridge, which is steep and rough in places but should give most walkers little difficulty. The backdrop to the ridge, with Loch Lomond's island-studded southern expanse dead ahead, is stunning.

Ptarmigan ridge is steep and challenging. Along the ridge, the path can be narrow and rough at points, but is generally easy to follow. From the ridge and the peak itself, you are afforded magnificent views over Loch Lomond; nestled charmingly amid the rugged mountain landscape.
