The Knibbs Knob Trail offers a challenging and rewarding hiking experience within Uvas Canyon County Park, known for its sustained steep ascent. You'll start in shaded forests of madrones and oaks, gradually climbing through switchbacks before the trail opens up to more exposed sections. The real highlight is the panoramic vista from the summit of Knibbs Knob, where you can enjoy views of the Santa Cruz and Diablo Mountains after your climb.
This 4.5-mile (7.2 km) route, with 1520 feet (463 metres) of elevation gain, is rated moderate and typically takes around 2 hours and 38 minutes. It's a great option if you're seeking a rigorous workout and impressive viewpoints. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the terrain can be steep and loose in places, and muddy near Swanson Creek after rainfall.
Unlike the park's gentler Waterfall Loop Trail, the Knibbs Knob Trail stands out for its demanding profile, making it one of the steeper trails in the Bay Area. The strenuous climb culminates in a rewarding experience, offering a unique perspective on the region's natural beauty. A picnic table at the summit provides a perfect spot to rest and soak in the scenery.
