The 701 Loop (Southern Edge) offers a quintessential high desert mountain biking experience, weaving through rolling hills and varied terrain near Henderson, Nevada. You'll encounter smooth sections interspersed with steep ascents, quick descents, and technical features like loose rocks and occasional 2-4 foot drops, all set against a backdrop of yuccas and cactuses. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic views of the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area mountains and the distant Las Vegas Strip, making the effort worthwhile.

This difficult 38.0-mile (61.2 km) loop, with its substantial 4127 feet (1258 metres) of elevation gain, is a serious undertaking that typically takes around 5 hours and 46 minutes to complete. Starting from the McCullough Hills Trailhead, it's essential to carry plenty of water due to the exposed desert conditions. Consider riding during cooler parts of the day or year to avoid the intense desert heat, as there's little shade along the route.

The McCullough Hills trail system, which includes the 701 Loop, is renowned for its remote feel and extensive network, allowing for customized rides. It's a popular spot for endurance training and offers a good workout with sweeping vistas. Despite its proximity to urban areas, the trail provides a genuine escape into the high desert environment, showcasing native flora and fauna in a rugged setting.
