    Hiking

This fire lookout was made in 1934 and is one of the three remaining fire lookouts in the Gifford Pinchot National Area. This fire lookout, perched atop Burley Mountain, provides an excellent view of four inactive volcanoes: Adams, Rainier, Saint Helens, and Hood. To get there, you will use some popular trails and a closed forest road, offering a mix of forested areas, open meadows, and rocky sections. It includes a steady ascent with some switchbacks as you approach the summit.

Embark on the challenging Burley Mountain Trail, a difficult hike spanning 13.2 miles (21.2 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3985 feet (1214 metres). You can expect to spend around 7 hours and 28 minutes traversing this route. As you steadily climb, you will pass through a second-growth forest, where remnants of older trees stand as a testament to past fires. The final half-mile to the summit reveals areas rich with huckleberries and wildflowers, leading you to the historic Burley Mountain Fire Lookout. From this vantage point, you are rewarded with expansive panoramic views.

When planning your hike on Burley Mountain Trail, be prepared for rugged conditions underfoot. Portions of the trail may be overgrown, or you might encounter downed trees, washouts, and mud holes, especially depending on the season. The road leading up to the mountain can also be rough, so a high-clearance vehicle or 4WD might be necessary for access to the trailhead. Always check current conditions before heading out to ensure a smooth journey.

This trail is situated within the vast Gifford Pinchot National Forest, offering a true immersion into the Pacific Northwest wilderness. The highlight of your effort is reaching the historic Burley Mountain Fire Lookout, which provides exceptional panoramic views. From this elevated position, you can clearly see iconic peaks such as Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. This makes the Burley Mountain Trail a notable destination for those seeking both a physical challenge and stunning mountain vistas.
