American Basin Trailhead/Handies Peak

The American Basin Trail offers an easy high-alpine hike, covering 1.1 miles (1.7 km) with an elevation gain of 867 feet (264 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 45 minutes, immersing yourself in the stunning scenery of Colorado's San Juan Mountains. When planning your visit, be aware that reaching the trailhead often requires a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle due to rugged road conditions. This route is situated within the Handies Peak Wilderness Study Area and is particularly renowned for its spectacular wildflower displays.
