Prepare for a challenging jogging experience on the Y Mountain Trail, a difficult route that climbs 3262 feet (994 metres) over 6.8 miles (11.0 km). As you ascend, you'll pass through diverse terrain, from open slopes to lush forests of quaking aspen and Douglas fir. The iconic white "Y" landmark, visible from afar, serves as a significant waypoint and offers a great spot to pause. Expect to spend around 2 hours and 28 minutes completing this rewarding ascent, enjoying the changing scenery as you go.
To make the most of your visit, plan your jog during spring or fall when the temperatures are milder and trail conditions are ideal. Starting early in the morning provides welcome shade for a good portion of the climb, especially on sunny days. The trail up to The Y is well-maintained, featuring benches at the start of most switchbacks if you need to rest. Remember to bring plenty of water, as this is a sustained uphill effort.
This route is a prominent feature of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, offering more than just a workout; it's a journey through a vibrant ecosystem. Beyond the famous "Y", the trail continues to higher elevations, revealing expansive panoramic views of Provo, Utah Lake, and the majestic Mount Timpanogos. It's a popular local landmark, deeply connected to the community and a testament to the region's natural beauty.
