The Cholla Cactus Garden is a distinctive natural monument located within Joshua Tree National Park, United States. Situated in the Pinto Basin, this unique area marks the fascinating convergence of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. At an elevation of approximately 644 meters, it offers a captivating viewpoint into the desert's botanical wonders.

Visitors are consistently drawn to the garden's visually striking landscape, dominated by a dense concentration of teddybear cholla. The unique botanical display, especially during sunrise or sunset, creates a memorable experience as the cacti appear to glow. Many find the short, accessible loop trail perfect for a quick yet immersive encounter with this unusual desert flora.

Before visiting, it's crucial to be aware of the "jumping" cholla. These cacti have stem-joints that detach easily, so hikers advise keeping a respectful distance and wearing closed-toed shoes to protect your feet and calves. The terrain is flat and the loop trail is short, making it suitable for all ages. Parking is available at the trailhead, and arriving early, especially before 10 am, is recommended to avoid crowds and the desert heat.

The best time to visit the Cholla Cactus Garden is during the cooler months, particularly autumn, or in spring (March to May) when the cacti display their yellow-green blooms. Early mornings or late afternoons offer the most dramatic lighting for photography and a more comfortable experience. The 0.4 km loop nature trail provides an easy walk, making it a family-friendly activity to observe the unique cholla cactus and other desert plants like brittlebush and creosote bush.

Many visitors share that the garden offers a truly unique experience, unlike any other part of Joshua Tree National Park. Observing the intricate details of the teddybear cholla, with their dense yellow spines, is a standout moment. Keep an eye out for desert wildlife, such as the cactus wren, which often builds its nests safely within the protective spines of the cholla.

    Hiking

The Cholla Cactus Garden is beautiful to look at – from a respective distance though. If you have ever hiked near a Cholla Cactus, you know why it is also called "the jumping cactus". Spiky parts of the plant somehow end up in you calves and it is no fun to get these out of your skin. So just enjoy the garden and keep your distance. ;)
