Start your hike on the Hector Falls Trail, an easy 1.9-mile (3.0 km) route that guides you through mature forests, rich with hemlock trees. You will begin on a wide, clear old forest service road before it narrows into a footpath. The trail involves a gentle ascent, gaining 254 feet (78 metres) over an estimated 52 minutes of hiking. Your destination is the unique Hector Falls, a 20-22 feet tall waterfall that cascades over a rectangular rock outcrop. When water levels are high, the falls split into two distinct channels, creating a striking visual within a grotto of cliffs and large boulders.
Before you set out, be aware that the initial access road to the trailhead can be muddy, so choose your footwear wisely. You might also notice some gas industry infrastructure along the way. As you get closer to the falls, the path becomes more rugged, requiring careful footing over logs and rocks. Be prepared for potential creek crossings, especially after rain. Parking access roads can also be muddy and unmaintained, particularly in winter, so plan your visit accordingly.
This trail is notable for its distinctive waterfall, which uniquely cascades over a rectangular rock formation rather than a sheer drop. The surrounding grotto, formed by cliffs and large boulders, enhances the natural beauty of the falls. The journey through mature forests, including beautiful hemlock trees, offers a peaceful experience. It is a rewarding hike for most fitness levels, providing a chance to explore the natural landscape of Allegheny National Forest.
