Spettine Castle is located in the territory of the Municipality of Bettola, and is situated on the top of a hillock guarding an ancient link road between the Nure and Trebbia valleys.
Originally, the site was fortified by the local Da Spettine family; later, in 1396, the Viscontis bought the castle, which held a primary importance for the control of the territory south of Piacenza.

From Lugherzano to Monte Sant'Anna via Spettine – ring tour

Embark on a moderate 7.6-mile (12.2 km) ring tour from Lugherzano to Monte Sant'Anna via Spettine, a hike that typically takes around 3 hours and 55 minutes to complete. You will gain about 1736 feet (529 metres) in elevation as you traverse diverse terrain, including natural paths, unpaved roads, and some asphalt sections. As you hike, you will encounter the impressive Calanchi di Piacenza, offering splendid panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, and catch glimpses of the tower of Castello di Spettine emerging from the vegetation.

While the paths are generally easily walkable, be aware that one section near Spettine, an old path, is overgrown; it is suggested to stay on the carriage road there. The route features sections along the ridge of a calanco, which can be tricky, but an alternative, signposted route is available. This trail is suitable for various skill levels, though good training is recommended due to the elevation gain and varied surfaces.

This trail uniquely combines natural geological formations with historical elements, making it a rich experience. You will see the striking calanchi, which are gullies formed by erosion, alongside historical sites like the Castello di Spettine and the restored Santuario di Sant'Anna in Missano, an important religious site. The blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes this route a notable choice in the Piacenza area.
