La Cala is a sea arch between Via Francesco Crispi and Foro Italico, corresponding to the oldest port in the city of Palermo. The Phoenicians were the first to exploit this natural inlet, into which the Kemonia and Papireto rivers flowed, now diverted due to the expansion of the historic center. The pier, protected to the east by the Castello a Mare, was built between 1300 and 1445 and remained the city's main landing place until the 16th century, a period when the port development of the areas of the Santa Lucia (current Borgo vecchio) and Sant'Erasmo districts began.
