Even the Romans broke stones here, let them slide down the mountain and brought them onto ships in their small loading station at the southern end of what is now Königswinter. Local researchers and experts argue whether it was not a small Roman port after all. Whatever the case may have been - in Bonn and Cologne, even in Xanten and Nijmegen, trachyte from the Drachenfels was used for building.
