Both the Bagbander Tief, an old natural watercourse, and the Spetzerfehnkanal, a typical fen canal from the 18th century, are cut through by the Sauteler Kanal (also called Randkanal). Construction of this canal only began in 1967 in order to divert water from the higher-lying geest and moorland areas directly into the Ems and to relieve the drainage of the lowlands.
