Vrijlegem is a hamlet of Mollem, a rural sub-municipality of Asse. The name 'Vrijlegem' itself is derived from the Germanic FRIGILINGAHAIM which means 'dwelling of the people of Frigilo'. In this we recognize the personal name Frilo, a nickname for Frijo meaning 'the free one'. Vrijlegem was a collective agricultural settlement of Frilo and his people, who occupied a farmstead with a number of families.
