The Skyline Boulevard – Grizzly Peak Boulevard loop from Ashby is a quintessential Bay Area road cycling route, offering a challenging ride through diverse terrain. You'll wind through redwood groves and oak woodlands, transitioning from urban fringes to stunning natural vistas. The continuous panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Mount Diablo, particularly from spots like Inspiration Point, are a major draw, making every pedal stroke worth the effort.

This difficult 45.4-mile (73.0 km) loop demands good fitness, with 4182 feet (1275 metres) of elevation gain over an estimated 3 hours and 44 minutes. Expect significant, sustained climbs and technical descents on winding roads. While the route is popular, sections of Skyline Boulevard and Grizzly Peak Boulevard can experience heavy traffic, especially on weekends, so consider riding on weekdays for a more serene experience.

This loop is a classic for a reason, blending the convenience of urban access with the reward of exceptional natural beauty. It's a rewarding experience for cyclists who appreciate a good challenge and want to see the entire Bay Area unfold beneath them. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like deer and owls as you navigate the varied landscapes.
