The stone dumps of the Steinsburg on the Kleiner Gleichberg near Römhild in Thuringia are a sea of volcanic rock formed by the eroding basalt blocks of the former volcano. They line the slopes of the basalt cones and are a typical feature of the crumbling volcanic ruins of the Gleichberg Mountains. The term "Steinsburg" probably derives from these large stone fields surrounding the mountain plateau. In Celtic times, these basalt blocks were used to build dry-stone walls for the oppidum (hilltop settlement) built around the mountain.

Simply beautifully done and one of many places to rest. The information board sign has already been commissioned and will complete the whole experience. Let's hope everything is maintained and everyone leaves this place as it was found. Respect for the effort.

A new seating area has been set up at the foot of the Straufhain, along with a shelter and an information board on the "Historic Straufhain Castle Ruins." A very successful evaluation of the area, thanks to the Friends of Straufhain e.V. Every visitor can enjoy it.

At the foot of the Großer Gleichberg, above the monument, stands this oak tree, designated as a natural monument. The surrounding area was recently redesigned. A new bridge now spans the small ditch, and a bench sits directly beneath the tree, inviting visitors to linger. A display with an insect hotel and an information panel on appropriate conduct in the nature reserve has also been installed. These improvements have created an attractive environment. Many thanks to the Friends of the Großer Gleichberg for their fantastic commitment! 👌🏻
