The mill is the only one on the Schwalm that can boast two water wheels, one is built of wood, the second was erected from iron in 1905. In 1937, milling operations ceased. Until 1960, the mill was still operated as a sawmill. Since that time, the Mühlrather mill has been used as an excursion destination and restaurant on the Hariksee. With the iron wheel, an electric generator has been operated for electricity generation since 1995. The wooden wheel was faithfully renewed in 2002.
