Samuelova Cave (Samuel's Cave)

Highlight • Cave

In 1718 Samuel Görner carved a cave into the stone. Here he lived as a hermit and occasionally made glasses and binoculars to order. Originally, however, he had been a gardener, perhaps because of the love of nature.

Samuel lived here until 1735. He then moved to Sloup Castle. Since then, the height has not been permanently inhabited.

Around 1900 the two viewpoints were then built on and next to the dwelling. The view has been admirable since then.

Many writings can be found in the cave, and it also has two windows. There is a possibility of resting in front of the house and there are two viewpoints with railings. An ascent is unfortunately not possible for wheelchair users. Dogs can master the small steps.

Have fun....

Hope Ice Cave

Highlight • Cave

The cave has been known to locals for several centuries as the ice hole. Around 1870, the Zwickau mining association built the first access route to the cave and began marketing it for tourism. The descent to the cave floor, 6 meters below, was initially done via a carved tree trunk; later a ladder was installed. Around 1900 the entrance to the cave was barred, and for a fee you could get the key from a nearby mill. On busy weekends, a kiosk at the entrance sold refreshments. After 1945, the cave was freely accessible and was often damaged by ice formations breaking off and campfires. In 1966 the cave was declared a protected natural monument because of its unusual character, but it was not until 1988 that the cave entrance was closed again and the destruction stopped. Until 1995, access to the cave was permitted after approval by the administration of the Lusatian Mountains landscape protection area; since then, viewing has no longer been permitted due to the risk of collapse.

Mühlstein Rock Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Felsentor Mühlstein is a rock gate similar to the cowshed on the German side, just not blessed with such a great view. However, it is very idyllic. An inn on site is not available, but hostinec's in the area.

April 3, 2026, Rock Dwelling (Skalní Byt)

The Peklo National Nature Monument connects two villages - Dubice and Zahrádky. It is a route for hikers that leads through beautiful nature. The trail guides visitors through local beauties in the valley of the Robečský stream, including a ruin and bizarre rock formations. From Zahrádky, you also walk past a dwelling in the rock. However, it was empty in today's cold weather.

Today, this is an impressive barbecue and festival area at the entrance to the "Valley of Hell". From here, you can also quickly reach Zahrádky Castle (Neugarten). The small village also offers shopping and dining options.

This cave was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Samuel Görner, a native of Sloup, from the old Görner glassmaking family, which had a long tradition of manufacturing optical aids. Although he was a trained ornamental gardener, he also worked as a glass lens grinder. He lived in the cave from 1718 until April 27, 1735, when he moved to the Einseidlerstein (skalní poustevna). There, he devoted himself primarily to gardening and continued his work on the manufacture of spectacles and binoculars. In 1742, he fled to Prague, allegedly for fear of being recruited by the Prussians, and after his return, he made a living for a time from the manufacture of burning glasses. In 1756, he made a pilgrimage to Rome and, after his return around 1760, lived again as a hermit on Skalický vrch (Langenauer Berg). Later, he moved to an unoccupied hermit's hut on the Holy Mountain near Příbram, where he was robbed of the money that pilgrims had saved from him and murdered. His statue, with a telescope pointing towards the horizon, still symbolizes the Hermit's Stone on the southern edge of Sloup. Highly recommended!

The Modlivý důl (Prayer's Ditch) is a romantic rocky valley, approximately 1 km long, cut deep into the sandstone base of the Slavíček (Slabitschken) and Tisový vrch (Eibenberg) mountains on the northeastern edge of Svojkov (Schwoika). This rocky valley was originally called Smolný důl (Pechgraben), as the local charcoal burners also maintained pitch kilns in which they produced wagon grease. Only later did a pilgrimage site develop here, the origins of which are told by various legends. According to one of them, the young knight Jaroslav von Svojkov voluntarily died here with the beloved daughter of the brewmaster from Velenice (Wellnitz) because the knight's parents were not fond of their love. Another legend tells that a young man killed his rival here. Highly recommended!!!
