A terp is a man-made hill built for people to live on so they were protected from the water. Terpen are found in Friesland and Groningen. In Groningen they are called wierden. Most terpen originated in the Iron Age and were inhabited for a very long time, sometimes being built ever higher. Some terpen still exist today, such as the terp of Hegebeintum. This terp is the highest terp in the Netherlands. It originated around 600 BC. Around 1900, the terp was excavated (for peat) and many archaeological finds were made, including the terp lady of Hegebeintum. Visit? At the foot of the terp of Hegebeintum lies the Visitor Centre. Here you can book guided tours to the 12th-century Romanesque church on the terp and you can visit the Archaeological Support Point. You can also get a glimpse into the excavations that were done around 1900. A reconstruction has been made of this on the northeast side of the terp. Look at the website of Terp Hegebeintum for more information.
