R.J. Cleveringsluizen

Highlight • Monument

On the border of Groningen and Friesland you will find the R.J. Clevering sluices. After the storm surge of 1953, it was decided to strengthen the Dutch coastline. In 1960, the cabinet decided to close off the Lauwerszee by constructing a 13 km long closing dike, which would create the Lauwersmeer. The Lauwers locks were built to ensure drainage. On May 23, 1969, the Lauwerszee was finally closed under the watchful eye of Queen Juliana. In 2007 the name of the Lauwers locks was changed to the current name R.J. Clevering sluices.

Today we did a triple tour cycling - boating - running

The cycling portion of this tour was "fighting the pedals" today. With such headwinds, you appreciate the "e" before the bike all the more 😂😇

Start in Vierhuizen, it is 11 km to the port of Lauwersoog. Then take the ferry 11 km (22 km recorded is ferry time) to Schiermonnikoog, the smallest of the inhabited West Frisian Islands (20 km long, about 4 km wide).
The ferry takes all types of vehicles across. When you arrive at the port, there is also a bike …

Today tour to Schiermonnikoog. Weather was doable cloudy occasionally sunny, few drops of rain with quite a bit of 💨. From Vierhuizen via Marnehuizen to Lauwersoog where the ferry departed. Nice cycling on the island with many shell paths. On the return journey by boat but sat down, apparently no GPS reception. Cycled back via Marnehuizen. Marnehuizen which is a …
