The Amtshaus is privately owned today. In its foundation walls, it dates back to a castle on this very spot - the Hunteburg, which gave the place its name. It lay on the original course of the Hunte, which can only be guessed at by an almost dry riverbed. Likewise, the castle moat is completely dry. However, the oldest structure in Hunteburg still exists here: the arched bridge over the castle moat.

The varied landscape of the former Wittlage district is rich in charm. Streams originate in the densely wooded ridges of the Wiehen Hills, flowing north into a fertile plain. In the border zone between the hills and the North German Plain, they drive the wheels of old stone or half-timbered mills. The water-rich Hunte River is crossed by bridges, some of which are medieval, with rounded arches built of silvery limestone. In the north of the district, the Hunte flows through the moors and meadows of a large, silted-up lake, the Dümmer. Its extensive nature reserve is home to rare flora and fauna.
