Far from the hustle and bustle of modern life lies the mountain town of Ulrichstein, a state-recognized health resort. Ulrichstein is the highest town in Hesse, where peace and clean air create a highly relaxing environment. The town's houses are clustered at the foot of the Schlossberg, whose ruined peak at an altitude of 614 meters offers a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape and into the distance. The Vogelsberg Garden, the Museum im Vorwerk with its diverse events, and the Protestant church offer cultural variety. For those seeking more active activities, the numerous cycling and hiking trails, such as the Ohmtal Cycle Path, the Vogelsberg Volcano Ring, or the so-called "Weitblick Tour," are recommended. https://www.vogelsberg-touristik.de/vulkanregion/regionen-orte/ulrichstein.html

The customs house was built in 1464 from basalt rock and, together with the outwork, is the oldest building in the city. Here the tax collector collected the taxes and tolls for the lord of the castle. In 1825 the customs house became the property of the town of Ulrichstein and was used as a market house. From 1945 to 1965 it served as a residential building. After a renovation in 1968, it housed a small local history museum.
