Milk collection points (locally in southern Germany also Milchhäusl or Milchhäusle) used to be collection points for farmers in a certain area, to which they delivered their milk. From there it was collected and transported to bulk buyers. Most of the milk collection points were built in the 1930s. Before that, the milk was mostly collected by horse and cart from the individual milk-supplying farms. After the milk collection points were set up, mostly at a central location in the village, the milk was delivered there by the individual farmers. The buildings were used to collect and cool the milk until it was transported onward. The delivery conditions also made the milk collection points a social meeting place in many places.[1] The importance of milk collection points steadily decreased in the second half of the 20th century as a result of structural change and ever decreasing milk production. Depending on the region, the buildings in Germany and Switzerland became so unprofitable in the 1970s to 1990s that their operation was gradually discontinued.[2] The remaining buildings, mostly easily recognizable to this day by their typical ramp with stairs, often stood empty after their function as a milk collection point, until they were either demolished or converted. Today they often contain youth clubs, cultural meeting places or small bars. Source: Wikipedia
