The crypt is the only remaining part of the great basilica of Unterregenbach that is largely preserved in its original condition. The seven-aisled crypt hall, which occupies the entire width of the basilica, is adjoined by an apse supported by richly decorated columns. Presumably, an important relic was venerated here. It is assumed that the crypt retained its function for another 300 years after the destruction of the great basilica, until it, too, was used by the farmers only as a secular cellar in the 16th century. Whatever the crypt once housed during Unterregenbach's heyday had disappeared by the 16th century at the latest. The crypt was rediscovered in 1880 during the construction of the rectory and, following archaeological investigations, was restored to its original spatial form in 1976. https://www.stiftung-unterregenbach.de/das-raetsel-von-unterregenbach/krypta/

Here at the local swimming pond there is a very nice rest area with lots of seating. However, nothing is covered.

In the small town of Unterregenbach, a crypt from the Carolingian period was discovered under the rectory built in 1880, which was part of a large basilica around the year 1000, and this in a town with today 55 inhabitants. A nice old gentleman told us all this. The crypt and church can be visited free of charge.
