Ascent to the Roque Nublo Plateau Roque Nublo is one of Gran Canaria's most significant natural monuments. A giant that rises to an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters in the center of the island, within a natural landscape protected by a biosphere reserve. This impressive rock monolith—a symbol of Gran Canaria—rises 80 meters from the plateau and offers a uniquely expansive panoramic view; only a few mountains on the island can match it. On clear days, the neighboring volcano, the famous Teide, is clearly visible.

For me, this is an average S1 trail. Jumps appear suddenly, with significant gaps between them. There's also broken glass and other trash lying around. Not ideal. I found the trail layout tricky in places. I'd recommend bringing a spare inner tube because of the sharp rocks. Otherwise, it's awesome to be able to ride such a long trail here.

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take a bike on the trail to Roque Nublo. But the view is great.

Take pruning shears. From bottom to top it is certainly not easy and with all that reed it is impossible.

At the very end of the Barranco de la Data gorge lies the small town of Ayagaures and the two reservoirs Presa de Ayagaures

The varied microclimates mean you can ride through arid regions, green valleys, and ancient forests, often within a single tour.
Yes, Gran Canaria has options for less experienced riders. There are 42 easy mountain bike tours available, providing a gentler introduction to the island's landscapes. Many of the 173 moderate trails also offer accessible sections for those looking to build their skills.
Absolutely. Gran Canaria is renowned for its challenging terrain, with 191 difficult mountain bike routes designed for experienced riders. These often involve significant elevation changes, technical descents, and demanding climbs, such as the Pico de las Nieves and Roque Nublo View Loop, which features over 1200 meters of ascent and descent.
Many mountain bike trails offer stunning views and pass by iconic natural landmarks. You can ride near the majestic Roque Nublo and the highest point, Pico de las Nieves summit. Some routes also offer glimpses of the unique Maspalomas Dunes or pass by various dams like Ayagaures Dam.
While direct access to waterfalls from mountain bike routes might be limited, Gran Canaria is known for its natural pools formed by volcanic rock, particularly in the north. The El Charco de la Paloma is a notable waterfall highlight. Some routes may pass near these features, offering a refreshing stop after a ride.

Given the varied and often challenging terrain, including significant climbs and technical descents, an enduro bike is generally recommended for mountain biking in Gran Canaria. For families looking to mountain bike, it's best to focus on the 42 easy-rated trails. These routes typically have less demanding terrain and elevation changes, making them more suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels. Always check the route details for specific difficulty and length before heading out with children.
Parking availability varies depending on the specific trailhead. In more popular areas or near towns, you'll often find designated parking. For remote trailheads, roadside parking might be an option. It's advisable to check the starting point of your chosen route on komoot for specific parking information or local recommendations.
Public transport, primarily buses, connects many towns and villages across Gran Canaria. While some routes might get you close to trailheads, transporting mountain bikes on public buses can be challenging or restricted, especially during peak times. It's recommended to verify specific bus company policies regarding bicycle transport or consider shuttle services if available for easier access to more remote trails.
