The castle Neuwindeck, also popularly known as "Laufer Schloss", was built around 1300 by the Lords of Windeck, who had already built the castle Altwindeck on a spur near Bühl. Around 1300, the Windeck lineage split into the house of Alt- and Neuwindeck. The last male Neuwindeck died in Venice in 1592. The inheritance passed to his two sisters Ursula and Elisabeth. The once flourishing knightly family thus became extinct and the castle had not been inhabited since 1585. Numerous finds bear witness to the fact that the Knights of Windeck were a wealthy and respected knightly family. Existing records provide an overview of how the castle looked and was furnished.
