April 26, 2026, St. Johannes der Täufer Church (Ottersweier)

Parish Church of St. John The Ottersweier parish is one of the oldest in Middle Baden and was first documented over 1200 years ago. Several church buildings have been proven to exist at this site. During the construction of the large neo-Gothic church (1906-1909), care was taken to preserve important parts of the medieval predecessor churches. On the south tower, parts of the Romanesque choir tower (around 1200) can be clearly recognized. The late Gothic choir (1517) became the current entrance hall. Together with the arcade passage to the rectory on the east side, the complex forms a unified overall work of art. Further information can be found on the information stand in the church. On the square in front of the church, a memorial column (1910) with a statue of the blessed Margrave Bernhard von Baden commemorates the fallen of the war of 1870/71.

The St. Nikolaus Church has its origins in the Middle Ages. It originated from an early chapel and was later rebuilt and expanded several times. The holy Nicholas as patron shows the long ecclesiastical tradition of the place. Over the centuries, the church was and remains the religious and social center of Gamshurst to this day.

The Schwedenkreuz is reminiscent of the Thirty Years' War.

The church with the two towers is a striking landmark of Ottersweier

Great uphill and downhill. Compared to the steep path over Lake Mummelsee, this path to the Kleine Grinde is longer and flatter. Downhill, you don't have to worry about pedestrians either, as there are very few people around. Cars are only allowed up here with special permission (e.g., SWR employees). Due to the surface damage, especially some nasty bumps, you shouldn't necessarily just push your bike. What I mean by pushing: If you want to go from the Kleine Grinde to the Bismarck Tower, you have to cross gravel for a short time and then a bit of the rock trail. The gravel section from the SWR radio tower to the wind turbine is a bit rougher and extremely steep. On the rock trail, you'll get quite a bit of shaking, and there's a risk of getting a flat tire! It's naturally slippery when wet.

The view over the hills of the Black Forest is beautiful, but it is too busy here directly at the Mummelsee

One of the many churches dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The Achern district of Gamshurst also has the three golden balls in the town's coat of arms, which are considered to be an attribute of Saint Nicholas. According to a legend, he helped three girls out of poverty with these gifts and they were able to marry honorably thanks to this dowry.
