Saint Stephen (or in another spelling Stephan, both variants also partly with the Latin ending "...us"), patron saint of this church in the place of the same name, is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and is the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates him on the second day of Christmas, December 26th. When Stephen expressed his vision of the open heaven "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

At around 8:30 a.m. on May 25, 1809, the Austrian vanguard under General Ettinghausen encountered the French avant-garde near St. Walpurgis Church, which skillfully held off the Austrians until their own main force arrived. Jelacic had also made a strategic mistake that would have bitter consequences. His troops were positioned in such a way that the Liesing River flowed past them. However, there were only two small bridges available for a possible retreat. Ettinghausen's warnings fell on deaf ears, as Jelacic was too impressed by the strategically advantageous high position of his position. So 20 Austrian infantry battalions with more than 10,000 men and four guns faced 28 French battalions with around 15,000 men, twelve guns, and four squadrons of cavalry.

The town of Sankt Stefan is a wonderful place to take a short break. It is located between Kraubath an der Mur and Sankt Michael in Upper Styria. The town is very easy to reach via the R2 Mur cycle path. The church is a beautiful yellow and white and looks simply great. You can see this beautiful church from far away.
