The ruin of Vilsegg Castle, a former defensive structure, thrones about sixty meters above the Vilstal on an 887-meter-high rocky hill that drops steeply on all sides. The high castle, first mentioned in 1263, was likely built around 1220. It is considered one of the most significant examples of Staufen architecture in Tyrol. It was inhabited at least until 1709, after which it fell into ruin. Only the mighty, six-story keep, the oldest part of the castle, is essentially preserved.
