April 8, 2026, Old Church of Witikon

The Alte Kirche Witikon is a Protestant Reformed church in the Witikon district. With its location at 629 m above sea level, it is the highest church in the city of Zurich. The Alte Kirche Witikon was first mentioned in documents in the year 1270. Originally, it was a chapel dedicated to St. Otmar. In 1612, the church received its first steeple. In 1768, the church was expanded with a new, large choir, becoming a spacious preaching hall. In the years 1820, 1889, and 1901, the church was remodeled again, receiving a new gallery, a new choir window, and a new steeple. After a complete renovation in 1926, a sacristy was added in 1939–1940, and the church was equipped with new pews, wall paneling, and a new gallery balustrade. In 1975, a choir renovation took place, and a new organ was installed on the east and north walls of the choir. The Alte Kirche Witikon stands on a hilltop in the center of the historic core of Witikon. According to legends, a Celtic cult site is said to have once been on the hilltop.[2] The surrounding meadows were protected in time in the 20th century with a building ban, so that the church could retain its distinctive appearance. On the teardrop-shaped area around the church, the historic Witikon churchyard was established before the year 1000. It is the oldest cemetery in the city of Zurich that is still in use. Due to the building ban on the surrounding meadows, the churchyard could not be expanded, so the new cemetery had to be built on Witikonerstrasse. In front of the church is a fountain with a round basin and a kneeling figure by Arnold Gygi from 1938. The Alte Kirche Witikon has the ground plan of a rectangular nave with a rectangular choir. The sacristy from 1948 is located to the north, and the entrances to the church are to the west and south. The interior of the church is kept simple and is finished with a flat wooden ceiling. The baptismal font dates from 1715, the choir windows were designed by Max Billeter in 1939. The western gallery balustrade completes the interior furnishings.
