The earliest mention of the parish, and thus also of the parish church, dates back to 1275. Hans von Wernau had the late medieval church, with Romanesque-Gothic stylistic elements, built within the walled castle grounds. The church was "enlarged and renovated in the year of our Lord 1882"—so it says above the portal of the old tower. While the nave was demolished, the tower and chancel of the old church have been preserved as protected cultural monuments and as a striking feature. The bronze of the church bells was used as cannon fodder in both World Wars.
