The bridge was built in the 17th century as part of a significant trade route, illustrating the infrastructure of the era before the widespread use of turnpike roads. Its narrow width and low parapets were specifically designed to accommodate packhorses, which carried goods in panniers, or saddlebags, across the bridge.

Exploring the Dark Peak

The best hiking trails near Sheffield can be found in the phenomenally diverse Dark Peak. This region of the Peak District has rare blanket bog, found only sparsely around the world and a magical landscape to hike across. In the late spring and early summer, the bog is a fluffy, white carpet of cottongrass. Crowberry, bilberry and heather are also abundant plants here.

When you’re planning walks near Sheffield, you’ll be pleased to know that some of the Peak District’s most famous areas are close to the city. Hathersage, with its impressive Stanage Edge escarpment is a fantastic place to hike and the area is rich in valley trails and steep paths with outstanding views.

Edale, Ladybower Reservoir and the breathtaking Kinder Scout mountain are all quick to reach from Sheffield. These beautiful places all offer a labyrinth of trails that allow you to tailor your hike to your exact preferences. Fancy an easy stroll? A strenuous multi-day expedition? It’s all within easy reach here.

Getting out in Sheffield’s immediate surroundings

You don’t have to head into the Peak District to enjoy excellent hikes near Sheffield. This thriving city is well-known for its obsession with the outdoors and it has many rivers, parks and woodlands in its immediate surroundings.

The River Rivelin has a particularly beautiful set of riverbank trails that not only place you in the peaceful nature of the city outskirts, but that also hint at the area’s industrial past. Amongst the trees and mossy rocks you’ll find old mills, weirs and stepping stones. It joins the River Loxley in Sheffield’s outskirts and you can follow it to its source on Hallam Moors, through tranquil woods complete with waterfalls.

Sheffield actually sits on the confluence of a further four rivers and is set across foothills and a valley. You’ll have plenty of river walks to explore and it’s easy to hike up gentle hills and be quickly rewarded with lovely, sweeping views.

To the north west of the city, you can follow the River Don up to deep woodlands and choose a new forest for each hike. Wharncliffe Wood, Greno Wood and Great Hollins Wood are all deserving of your time and camera shutter.
