“The swallow lift is a 6-metre-high mast with artificial housing at the top,” says Robin Van Heghe of Regionaal Landschap. “It is a lift especially for the house martin. Roof overhangs have been placed at the top, with artificial nests, on which they can make their own mud nest. The location at the Vaartplein is ideal, because the swallows can find enough insects above the damp grasslands in the Kalkense Meersen.” (Vrtnws)

From the 13th century, the Scheldt made a graceful bend between Wetteren, Kalken and Schellebelle. Around 1890, a cut was made that shortened the shipping route by 3.5 kilometers. The old riverbed silted up, but in 2018 the Oude Schelde was excavated again to restore the river-bound character of the Kalkense Meersen. Near junction 24, the old river bend babbles again in all its glory. You can admire that from the lookout tower. (Routen.be)

At the end of the 19th century, the Scheldt was straightened at the Kalkense Meersen. The river bend (or meander) was cut off and filled in. By re-excavating the ‘Old Scheldt’, raising the groundwater level, restoring the open water at the Scherenmeersen sub-area and targeted mowing by local farmers, Kalkense Meersen can evolve into a climate buffer. The patron saint of this church, Saint Denis, is usually depicted in a very special way, namely with his head in his hands. The saint died a martyr's death by decapitation. After his death he was not satisfied with his burial place, so he took his head and went to his chosen spot in Saint-Denis in Paris. In the church of Kalken there is a triptych that depicts the turbulent life of this saint. (RouteYou)
