Santuario della Pietrina If you follow the road from Iano that leads to Palagio and turn left onto the steep uphill road, you will arrive at the Santuario della Pietrina. Once there, you will be able to see all that remains of the ancient Castello della Pietrina. Once the place where the sanctuary stands was called "Pietra", while today this name indicates the opposite hill where the foundations of an ancient watchtower remain and in the valley in the middle are the two lakes of the municipality of Montaione. The sanctuary, dedicated to Saints Andrea and Agata, was expanded in 1890 and restored in 1927 and a few years ago. Today it is part of the diocese of Volterra. Until recently, the sanctuary housed a painting of the "Madonna and Child", a work by the Sienese painter Bartolo di Fredi (1353 - 1410), a student of Simone Martini who worked in nearby Volterra in those years. Of the painting today only the central panel remains, which represents the "Madonna with Child" holding an apple. Today the painting is preserved in the bishop's palace of Volterra.
