Teufen - Silvesterchlausen in Appenzellerland In Appenzellerland we celebrate the turn of the year twice: according to the Gregorian calendar on December 31st and according to the Julian calendar on January 13th. On the dates mentioned, the Silvesterchläuse are out and about. A distinction is made between beautiful, wüeschten and schö-wüeschten Chläuse. The latter are also known as Naturchläuse. The beautiful ones wear artfully designed headgear with scenes from rural life, which are lovingly handcrafted in hundreds of hours of free time. The Wüeschten and Schö-Wüeschten captivate with their artfully decorated hats, bonnets and masks. From early in the morning, the Silvesterchläuse are out and about, going from house to house and wishing everyone "es guets Neus" with devout singing and bubbly Zäuerli. In the evening they are out and about in the pubs until midnight. If December 31st or January 13th falls on a Sunday, the theft takes place on the Saturday before. 1889: Where, please, is the train station, Teufen? The railway between Gais and St. Gallen was opened in 1889. It became a rack railway and a tram at the same time. It was therefore difficult to decide where the train station should be in Teufen. Because the railway follows the road, it has to be on it. But there is no suitable place in the village center. The solution is to separate the passenger stop and the freight transfer point. The former "Des Alpes" inn is used for the passenger station (the "Schwarze Bären" that was built together with it has been demolished). The track system extends into the village square. It has a stumpy track, but no crossing point. It is a stop, but not a train station. The access from the east leads right across the village square, the one from St. Gallen as a rack ramp over the former access path to the "Des Alpes". Train station, Appenzell Railways, Teufen 1872 - 1877: the train station that never existed The history of Teufen train station begins long before the railway is built. After the railway reached St. Gallen in 1856, in the early 1870s the manufacturers from the Appenzell Mittelland also wanted to connect to a railway. Transport times and the protection of goods were important. Engineer Dardier, who was also planning a railway from Winkeln to Appenzell at the same time, was commissioned to propose how a railway could be used to get from Gais to St. Gallen. He saw two possibilities: via Teufen - Lustmühle - Haggen or via Teufen - Speicher to St. Gallen. Cog railways did not yet exist. In 1874, Dardier suggested where a train station could be built for Teufen under these conditions. The 1874 plan could not yet refer to surveyed maps. The proposal is measured and drawn on the ground, which is why it is a little difficult to read. The geographical reference is missing. We have created it here and can only admire how precisely engineer Dardier worked, even if his presentation ends somewhat abruptly in places where he does not need the information (we have taken some houses and the waters from the Dardier plan for checking purposes).
