Sacred Way - Monte Cavo

Highlight • Trail

The Via Sacra is a beautiful paved road from the Roman era that climbs to the top of Monte Cavo. Today it is famous above all for the panoramic point to which it leads, called "Occhialone", from which you can enjoy a suggestive panorama that simultaneously embraces the two lakes in the area, that of Albano and that of Nemi.

This mountain was so important because on its top stood the temple of Jupiter of Latium. Every year, at the temple, the Feriae Latinae were held, great celebrations in honor of this divinity, particularly important in Lazio. The road that went up the mountain to reach this sacred place therefore took the name of Via Sacra. And this same road was also traveled by the victorious generals who celebrated their triumph: for this reason it was also known as the triumphal road.

The temple of Giove Laziale, however, was replaced in the Middle Ages by a hermitage dedicated to St. Peter. This later became a monastery and in more modern times even a hotel, where various important people seem to have stayed.

Today Monte Cavo is an important radio and television transmission center. And in fact on its top there are essentially only antennas, repeaters and various pylons.

The current Monte Cavo was a sacred mountain for the pre-Roman peoples of Lazio as on its summit (950 m above sea level) stood the Temple of Iuppiter Latiaris, the cult of Latin Jupiter united these peoples and therefore the temple was a pilgrimage destination.
The road route started from Rome and branched out for over 30 kilometres, first passing through Lake Nemi, where Diana Nemorensis was worshiped and from here the road reached the base of the sacred mountain from which the basalt-paved road began, still today excellently preserved and clearly visible, known precisely by the name of Via Sacra or Via Trionfale, which with a route of 6 km from the base of the Mount reached the Temple.

Panoramic point from which you can enjoy the view of Lake Albano (or Castel Gandolfo) and Lake Nemi. Both of volcanic origin, they are striking for their cobalt blue waters in contrast with the lush green of the vegetation that covers the vertiginous walls of the craters. A spectacle of nature and an open-air geology museum!

The viewpoint of the two lakes is located near the end of the Via Sacra path. It can also be reached by racing bike, although in the last 150 meters you have to push your bike along a path. From the panoramic point it is possible to admire a splendid view of Lake Nemi and Lake Albano.
