Luca N.
April 29, 2026, Cathedral and Archaeological Area of Concordia Sagittaria

The Cathedral of Saint Stephen in Concordia Sagittaria represents a pinnacle of early Christian and Romanesque art in Northern Italy. The current fifteenth-century building, characterized by an imposing isolated bell tower, stands upon a millennia-old stratification of faith and architecture. Outside, the archaeological area reveals the remains of the "Trichora Martyrium" from the 4th century, a trilobate structure built to honor the martyrs of Concordia, surrounded by an immense enclosure of Roman stone sarcophagi. These excavations, located at a lower level than the current street level, offer a unique glimpse into ancient Julia Concordia, a strategic base of the Roman Empire. Inside the cathedral and in the adjacent Byzantine baptistery, exquisite frescoes and mosaics complete a historical mosaic of rare intensity and beauty.

The Lemene River in Concordia Sagittaria.

The city’s mills date back to the 12th century. They were built by the bishops of Concordia, to whom they belonged until 1867. In fact, the bishops’ coats of arms are still visible on the facades today. On the opposite side to the entrances from the islet you can see the doors that overlook the Lemene river, once used for loading and unloading grain: this was done using a wooden pier that has now disappeared. In 1870 their ownership passed to various private individuals; however, the activity continued regularly until 1928 when the new owner, the Consorzio di Bonifica di Lugugnana, closed them. Purchased in 1970 by the Municipality of Portogruaro, they were transformed into an art gallery. Some stone millstones remain of the old milling systems today, visible in the space in front of the entrance, while the original paddle wheels have unfortunately been lost.
