March 15, 2026, Mural of Il Quarto Stato by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo

"The Fourth Estate" (1901) by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo is a famous oil on canvas depicting a march of laborers, set in Piazza Malaspina in Volpedo (Alessandria). A symbol of workers' struggle, the work combines Pointillist technique and social themes. It is now housed at the Museo del Novecento in Milan.

Beautiful Romanesque church in sandstone (typical of these areas), immersed in the Ardivestra valley. Unfortunately the interior is not always open to visitors.

San Ponzo Semola (hamlet of Ponte Nizza) is a village in the Oltrepò Pavese located on the left bank of the Staffora stream along the Voghera – Varzi “greenway” cycle/pedestrian path. The medieval portion of the town with its characteristic stone houses is located south of the town center at the foot of the small wooded valley of the Semola stream. San Ponzo was one of the railway stations on the Voghera-Varzi line, active between 1931 and 1966. In this timeless village stands the ancient church of San Ponzo, modified in 1400 without its medieval architectural features having been completely lost. Inside there are traces of frescoes and a stone baptismal font from 1161. Of note, the area of the Caves of San Ponzo and the Giaciglio del Santo can be reached with a short excursion on foot along the path that goes up to Guardamonte. Legend has it that in these caves in the third century AD. lived the holy hermit and martyr. Near the caves, the centuries-old "Grande Vecchio" tree of San Ponzo can be admired, although little reported.

Beautiful but extremely easy to puncture due to large thorns falling from the trees and present on the pavement along some sections of the route. The many punctures were also reported by local residents. It is advisable to bring a puncture repair kit with you.

Quarto Stato Volpedo Square

Piazza Castello (or Piazza del Palazzo, but also Piazza Malaspina in the popular version accepted by Pellizza himself, today Piazza Quarto Stato), is the place where the painter, between 1891 and 1901, places the advance of the workers. The square was born towards the middle of the 19th century with the renovation of the stately building, commissioned by the new owners Malaspina, who created a new access on the western side. Giuseppe Pellizza painted The Fourth Estate between 1898 and 1901; the work was the fruit of a long creative journey inspired by the protest of a group of workers, for which he had farmers and artisans chosen from among his fellow villagers from Volpedo pose.
