Hiking in the Sawatch Range explores a major sub-range of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado, characterized by massive mountains and U-shaped glacial valleys. The region features numerous peaks over 14,000 feet, including Mount Elbert, the highest in the Rocky Mountains. Trails traverse diverse ecosystems, from high-altitude ascents to alpine lakes and dense pine and aspen forests. The landscape bears the marks of past glaciation, with prominent ancient glacial moraines and pristine alpine lakes.

I saw an advertisement in a regional magazine from Ternitz and wanted to see if the technology was stable. I was frustrated after a series of bad card games and actually wanted to quit the whole thing. But Hot Chilli Bells https://hotchilli-bells.pro/ offered me a fresh start on the slot machines. I achieved a win that immediately lifted my mood and covered my old losses. I am very satisfied with the result today.

This is the only wooden shelter along the Colorado Trail. The floor is just dirt, but you can use it as a nice spot to take a break or to get out of the rain. There is plenty of room for camping next to the shelter.

The Continental Divide Trail/Colorado Trail intersects the Green's Creek Trail and the East Agate Creek Trail. There is ample space for camping. If you follow the Green's Trail a few meters further, you will find a log cabin with more space for camping.

The Continental Divide Trail/Colorado Trail meets with the Green's Creek Trail and East Agate Creek Trail. There is plenty of room to pitch tents. If you follow the Green's Trail for some yards, you will find a wooden shelter with more room for camping.

At this junction, the Continental Divide Trail/Colorado Trail meets with some minor dirt roads.

Close to the trailhead, there are some nice campsites nestled into pine trees. Beware that these are also car accessible. Marshall Pass is therefore a good spot to get on or off the Continental Divide Trail/ Colorado Trail. The area around Marshall Pass is also a great spot for rockhounding. The volcanic landscape bears geodes, agates and other interesting specimen, if you are willing to carry rocks. :)

The Continental Divide Trail (Willis Gulch Trail) crosses over the babbling Willis Creek. A nice water source!

Whoever lived here in Little Willis Gulch had a very idyllic front yard. ;) Next to the remains of the old cabin, there is tons of space for camping and good access to a small creek.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to hike in the Sawatch Range?

The prime hiking season in the Sawatch Range is from late June to September. During these summer months, the trails are generally free of snow, the weather is warmer, and the wildflowers are in full bloom. Autumn, particularly mid-to-late September, is also spectacular for the changing colors of the aspen trees. Be aware that high mountain passes like Independence Pass are typically closed from late autumn until late spring.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the Sawatch Range?

Yes, the range offers many gentler trails suitable for families and beginners. For a scenic walk around a stunning blue lake framed by snow-dusted peaks, the Turquoise Lake Trail near Leadville is an excellent choice. Another great option is the short hike to Weller Lake, which takes you through peaceful aspen forests to a beautiful alpine lake.

I'm looking for a moderate hike with great views. Any suggestions?

For a rewarding hike that isn't a full-day epic, consider the Ptarmigan Lake Trail. This route leads you through a forest to a stunning alpine lake surrounded by 14ers, where you might spot ptarmigan birds. It's a great way to experience the high-alpine environment without committing to a summit.

Are there any good circular hikes or loops?

Yes, you can find some great loop trails. The Lower Hunter Creek loop is a moderately rated option that offers a varied experience through the White River National Forest without having to retrace your steps.

What should I pack for a day hike in the Sawatch Range?

The weather in the Rockies can change rapidly, so it's crucial to be prepared. Essential items include:

  • Layers of clothing: A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer (like fleece), and a waterproof/windproof outer shell.
  • Navigation: A map and compass, or a GPS device/phone with downloaded maps.
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun is very strong at high altitudes.
  • Food and Water: More than you think you'll need.
  • First-aid kit: For blisters and minor injuries.
  • Sturdy hiking boots: With good ankle support.

Always check the weather forecast before you go.

Are dogs allowed on the trails in the Sawatch Range?

Dogs are generally permitted on most trails within the San Isabel and White River National Forests, but they must be under voice control or on a leash. However, some specific areas, like designated wilderness areas, may have stricter regulations. Always check the rules for the specific trail you plan to hike and be prepared to clean up after your pet to follow Leave No Trace principles.

Do I need a permit to hike in the Sawatch Range?

For most day hikes in the Sawatch Range, including ascents of the 14ers, you do not need a permit. However, if you plan to camp overnight in certain designated wilderness areas, a free, self-issued permit available at the trailhead may be required. Regulations can change, so it's always a good practice to check with the local ranger district (Leadville or Salida) for the most current information before your trip.

What are the trail conditions like for a challenging 14er like La Plata Peak?

The standard route up La Plata Peak is a strenuous and steep climb. The trail is well-defined but involves significant elevation gain over a relatively short distance, with rocky sections and potential for snow and ice, even in early summer. It's a classic, challenging Sawatch 14er that rewards hikers with incredible views from the summit.

Where can I find trailheads with good parking?

Many popular trailheads have designated parking, but they can fill up very early, especially on weekends. For example, the Mount Massive Trailhead Parking Lot near Leadville serves as a starting point for several major hikes. It's a well-regarded spot but has limited space, so arriving early is highly recommended to secure a spot.

Are there any historical sites I can see while hiking?

Yes, the region is rich with mining history. A great option is to explore the area around the ghost town of Winfield, which serves as the starting point for the Huron Peak via North Huron Trail. You can see well-preserved historic buildings before or after your hike, offering a unique glimpse into Colorado's past.

What do other hikers enjoy most about the Sawatch Range?

Hikers frequently praise the accessibility of its towering 14,000-foot peaks, the stunning beauty of its numerous alpine lakes, and the vast, open views from the high-altitude trails. The sheer variety, from forested valley floors to rocky summits, is a major highlight.
