Montecchio Roman Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

To get to the hamlet of Montecchio, starting from Boario, you pass over a scenic Roman bridge almost 25 meters long. It is built of granite and stone blocks on the remains of an older bridge, which connected the medieval castle to the opposite bank of the river.

In 2013 the bridge was closed to car traffic, becoming cycle-pedestrian only.

Lake Moro

Highlight • Lake

You go up through a well-kept and well-kept asphalted road. A very short climb with interesting slopes.
Lake Moro (lac de la cüna in Camunian dialect) is a small alpine lake in Val Camonica surrounded by woods and mountains.
The lake basin is located at 381 m above sea level and is small in size. It reaches a depth of 42.20 m and has rocky walls that immediately descend deep, in fact its waters are very dark and, in the winter, they can freeze. It would seem of glacial origin, even if some sources, especially oral ones, would speak of an alleged volcanic origin. The water comes from deep sub-lacustrine springs.

October 31, 2025, Lago di Lova

Lake Lova is a picturesque hiking destination located above Borno, on the Altopiano del Sole plateau in Val Camonica. It is appreciated for its alpine landscape, tranquility, and the variety of surrounding trails. The lake is located at approximately 1,392 meters above sea level and can be reached via several hiking trails, including the Sentiero della Memoria (Path of Remembrance) that starts from the church of San Fiorino in Borno. After a short paved stretch to the Trattoria Navertino, you take a dirt path that winds through larch and fir trees, with steep sections and slippery cobblestones. The hike is immersed in a natural environment typical of the Lombard Prealps, with natural fountains and good cell phone coverage. A longer alternative is the Monte Mignone – Lake Lova circular hike, approximately 11.1 km long with an elevation gain of 837 meters, to be done counterclockwise. This route offers spectacular views and passes through pastures and woods, with the lake as its focal point. Lake Lova is also a hub for other trails: from here, you can continue towards the San Fermo Refuge or the Laeng Refuge, following CAI trails 106 and 182. Parking is available near the lake, making it accessible even for less experienced hikers. Scenically, the lake is nestled in a green valley surrounded by woods and pastures, with calm waters reflecting the sky and surrounding mountains. It's an ideal destination in all seasons, but particularly captivating in autumn due to the colorful foliage.

To reach Montecchio di Darfo, starting from Boario, you cross the so-called "Roman bridge." It is a scenic 24-meter, single-span bridge, built from blocks of granite and Simona stone in 1686, over the remains of an older bridge that connected the medieval castle on Monticolo to the opposite bank of the river. It has been recognized as a national monument.

October 1, 2024, Lago Moro

Located at 381 m.a.s.l. in the basin between the Sorline area of Angolo Terme and the Capo di Lago hamlet of Darfo Boario Terme, Lago Moro is surrounded by lush nature. The basin welcomes us with its transparent waters, made dark and mysterious by the profiles of the vegetation.

The little church of S. Fermo was built around the 16th century on the pre-existing hermitage, which, according to tradition and legend, dates back to the time of Charlemagne and his conquest of Valcamonica. Although I did not have archaeological analysis equipment with me on my various visits, I can say with some certainty that the terracotta floor can be dated back, for its components and shapes, to the 16th/17th century. S. Fermo is one of the three brothers who dedicated themselves to prayer and penance: Glisente, Fermo and Caterina. Glisente (the eldest of the brothers) placed his base on the current Colma di S. Glisente - the underground church is interesting; Fermo, at the base of the Corna di S. Fermo; Caterina just above Lozio, on the path that gives access to the Concarena. The altarpiece of the little church depicts the two brothers in military uniform. Tradition and legend tell that Glisente and Fermo were knights and dignitaries of Charlemagne's army, who then, after the siege of Povia (773-774 AD, today's Pavia and seat of the Lombard kingdom Desiderio) retired to a hermit's life, disgusted by the blood and carnage, imitated by his sister Caterina. Fermo survived the death of his two brothers for many years, thanks to the help of an eagle and a bear, who supplied him with wood, honey beans, food and game. The three brothers used to communicate with each other with bonfires in the evening. In memory of this legend, starting from the Rifugio S. Fermo and following the ridge that leads to the Passo di Varicla, the traditional torchlight procession takes place in the second week of August, which then descends to Borno.
